Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority (Sound Transit)
Seattle, WA Sound Transit has been the popular name of Washington state's Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority since 1996. It was formed in 1993 by the Snohomish, King, and Pierce County Councils. It operates express bus, commuter rail, and light rail service in the region and constructs capital projects in support and expansion of those services.
Robert Louis Stevenson once wrote that in traveling, "...the great affair is to move." Stevenson's statement could very well describe what it's like traveling in the Central Puget Sound Region (an area with the 4th worst traffic in the country) - the great affair is to move. That's why the Sound Transit - Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority was created - to help people move around the region. It's Sound Transit's job to develop and deliver a regional high-capacity transit system to the citizens of urban King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. - 25 miles of new electric light rail transit connecting SeaTac, the Rainier Valley, downtown Seattle, First Hill, Capitol Hill, the University District, and if additional funding is available, Roosevelt and Northgate; and providing a light rail link between downtown Tacoma and the intermodal transit station being built near the Tacoma Dome
- 82 miles of commuter rail service connecting points along existing railroad tracks between Everett, Seattle, Tacoma and Lakewood, starting with service during rush hours
- more than 100 miles of "HOV Expressway" combining state-funded completion of continuous (left-side) HOV lanes and Sound Transit-funded direct access ramps to eliminate buses and carpools weaving through general purpose traffic lanes, improving access to the HOV system and ensuring fast, reliable local and regional bus service
- 18 new regional express bus routes primarily using the HOV expressway network to provide fast, reliable suburb-to-suburb transit connections
- regionwide coordination of schedules and fares among all local and regional transit services to provide customers with convenient, reliable, easy-to-use connections
